National Museum of Industrial History

A Smithsonian Institution affiliate that connects America’s industrial past with innovations of today, and based in a century-old facility on the site of the famous Bethlehem Steel works. Eckley Miners Village

Known as “a village frozen in time,” Eckley, founded in 1854, is testament to life in a coal mining or company town in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The town’s original miner dwellings, churches, doctor’s office and company store provide a historic glimpse of how miners and their families lived and helped to fuel the Industrial Revolution in America. The movie “The Molly Maguires” was filmed here and in Jim Thorpe, Pa.

Paradise Fishing Preserve

Two ponds, one stocked with trout the other with bass, make up the preserve. The preserve has everything you need “to reel ‘em in”: Pole rental, worms, hooks, buckets and a gutting station. Picnic tables, snacks, and refreshments are also available.

Tannersville Cranberry Bog Preserve

This unique bog ecosystem is the southernmost low elevation boreal bog along the eastern seaboard that inspires wonder among students, educators, scientists, nature lovers and photographers. Calla lilies, gold thread, carnivorous sundew and pitcher plants, native orchids, bog rosemary, Labrador tea and shrubs such as leather leaf, sheep laurel and swamp azalea are among the many plants in the bog. Black bear, river otter, bobcat, beavers, porcupines, minks, wild turkey, snowshoe hares and a host of birds call the bog home. Regularly scheduled walks are conducted by the Monroe County Environmental Education Center. Public access is permitted on the North Wood and Fern Ridge trails. Operated by the Nature Conservancy and the Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center.

A place to literally “climb the wall.” The Boulder Climbing Wall is almost 16 feet high and helps beginners of all ages learn balance and technique, and there are advanced routes for more experienced climbers. Coolbaugh Township Historical Society

Wills Mansion & Bicentennial Museum

The museum contains a wealth of diverse local artifact including toys and school materials from the 1930s; a military room recognizing the Tobyhanna Army Depot; and displays on ice harvesting and ice fishing. There’s also a mysterious secret staircase. Annie Mills, a wealthy member of Scranton society, built the mansion as her summer home in the 1920s.

Monroe County Historical Association

A center for connecting the county’s past with its present, the association is housed in the 1795 Stroud Mansion, the finest example of Georgian-style architecture in Monroe County. It offers four floors of exhibits portraying the history of the county from the time of Native Americans to today: An authentic colonial-era cellar kitchen, the early 18th Century Stroud Room and Victorian parlor, tools and weapons, antique toys, and a textile collection among other items. The Walters Library contains genealogical materials and local history resources.

Big Pocono State Park

Consists of 1,306 acres of rugged terrain on the summit and slopes of Camelback Mountain, the park features scenic views of three states. Hike 8.5 miles of trails. Most trails have steep grades. South Trail and the North Trail Lower Loop are open to mountain bikes and horses. Indian Trail offers a great vista from the eastern cliffs, visible from I-80 and points in Tannersville and Scotrun. Three picnic areas are on the top of the mountain at an elevation of 2,120 feet above sea level. The Cameltop Restaurant, near the summit of Camelback Mountain is reached by the park road or by taking the ski area’s chair lift.

Bushkill Falls

“The Niagara of Pennsylvania,” is actually a series of eight waterfalls tucked away in the deep woods of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Two miles of hiking trails, bridges, and walkways provide easy access to Pennel Falls, the 100-ft. high Main Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Lower Gorge Falls, Laurel Glen Falls, and three unnamed falls. There’s also the Bushkill Falls Mining Co. Maze. Owned since 1904 by the Charles E. Peters Estate, Bushkill Falls covers 300 acres populated by hemlock, pine, oak, maple, beech and birch trees, and is a birders delight.

Hours depend on season, day of week, and weather. Generally from 9 a.m. to close which can be 4, 5, 6, or 7 p.m.

Delaware Water Gap

Part of the National Recreation Area of New Jersey and Pennsylvania and operated by the National Park Service, the gap is a 1,000-ft. deep notch cut into the Kittatinny Ridge by the Delaware River. It is nearly a quarter mile wide and a mile wide from one mountain top to another, and is still forming today,  testatment to the power of flowing water. Forty miles of the middle Delaware National Scenic and Recreational River flow through the area, and 27 miles of the Appalachian Trail stretch across the Kittatinny Ridge. There are 67,000 acres of forested mountains, riverine valleys, fertile floodplains, historic villages, structures, and landscapes from the area’s colonial past. Don’t miss the Old Mine Road, the oldest commercial road in America.
